Cat surrendered to animal shelter because she ‘wanted to cuddle’

Meet Ellie, a four-year-old black and white cat whose heartbreaking story went viral this week. The sweet cat from Virginia’s story drew lots of attention after her photo and her plight was posted on Twitter.

Y’all. This is the saddest thing I’ve ever seen. This cat was returned to the shelter because she wanted to cuddle her owners at night.

And in the cat’s voice: ‘I was returned because I wanted to sleep with my human at night and I wasn’t allowed to, so I would cry outside the bedroom door.’

Ellie had been dropped of at the Chester, Virginia, Pet Smart, and she was described as a “love bug” who had done absolutely nothing wrong. Her information sheets states she is four years of age, is spayed and is up-to-date on all of her vaccinations. Kate Balow, owner of Meow Stories Central VA Cat Rescue is in charge of the kitty’s adoption.

Ellie had previously been in a West Virginia shelter and was adopted in August, but her adopter has since been in a relationship with someone who is allergic to cats. When Ellie was banned from the bedroom, she became very upset and cried outside the door.

We only accept owner surrenders on a case by case basis as our primary mission is to support our Virginia Rural Shelters and over the course of the last several years we have also become heavily involved with the networking, placement and transport of special needs and senior kitties up and down the East Coast of the United States.

Since Ellie’s story went viral, at least 25 applications have come in offering to welcome the cat into their homes. We’re sure Ellie’s heart will heal as she receives a wonderful, new home.
