In Sacramento, California, a two-year dog who came into the Sacramento SPCA needed emergency veterinarian help immediately. He had been found stuck in a fence and, neighboring dogs had attacked him. Sadly, the dog dubbed Willy Wonka, needed to have his ear flaps removed.
According to the Sacramento SPCA, a veterinarian technician, John Homquist, had been one of Willie’s caretakers while he was healing at the shelter and attended to the dog’s bandage changes everyday. So, as animal lovers, can we all just imagine how John bonded with the friendly pup and how he just wanted to do something special for Willie?
Would a dog with no ears be a desirable pooch to attract attention and be adopted? Maybe, would be adopters would be turned off by the scars around Willy’s head? John knew just what to do.
John was able to crochet Willie a hat with ears attached. The favorite part is the ears flopped around just like real ears. True, Willie wasn’t overjoyed having to wear a hat at the beginning, but he persevered in good natured pup style and smiled for the camera showing off his new ears.
We have two sets to go home with his new family! One handmade, one purchased! He does not have a history of living with cats or dogs, but based on his easy-going personality, we think he may do well with a slow introduction. He has lived with children before and done well!
Our favorite part is that the ears flop around just like real ones.
And it didn’t take long for Willy, the dog with the handmade floppy ears to become a Facebook sensation! It wasn’t long before Willy was adopted either. Check out what his new family said about him.
