Last elephant at Zoo Knoxville euthanized after hospice care

Admin

On Wednesday, May 8, 2024, the Zoo Knoxville sadly announced that Tonka, a 46-year-old African elephant was humanely euthanized. The 15,000 pound Tonka had been placed in hospice care earlier in the week when veterinarians at the zoo determined there were no more options to treat her acute pain and swelling in his left front leg.

As his leg’s condition continued to deteriorate and his pain could no longer be managed with medication, Tonka’s quality of life had reached a decisive turning point. His caregivers and the entire zoo staff that knew him had been by his side as he passed, both comfortably and peacefully.

Tonka had the distinction of being one of the largest and oldest African elephants in North America. During his 43 years at Zoo Knoxville, he was an iconic ambassador and known for his easy-going nature and intelligence. Tonka had been training to prepare for a move to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee while a barn was completed for him there, but the rapid decline in his physical condition made it clear that a move would not be possible.

This was Tonka from two years ago. He was a wonderful ambassador of kindness for sure, and we will remember him.

Forty-three year old Tonka is a very laid back elephant. He loves sweet treats like honey buns and strawberry is his favorite flavor (he even loves cold strawberry oatmeal) He really enjoys spending quality time with his keepers, mudding in wallows, and playing with his puzzle toys. Tonka loves to serenade his keepers with his velvety chortle noises.

His hospice plan ensured his final days were with the people he knew and trusted in a place that was familiar.

We are heartbroken and grieving. Tonka was beloved by our staff and our community and we are grateful for the compassion they have shown us. We were very committed to making sure Tonka left this world with all the dignity and love we could surround him with, and I hope that offers some comfort to everyone he touched.

Drew Rowan, interim President and CEO

Rest in peace Tonka.
