This tiny little survivor arrived at the AHS-Newark Branch in New Jersey a few days ago; she had been brought in by animal control officers (ACO’s). When her family moved out of their rented apartment, they took all their other pets with them but unfortunately left her behind. It wasn’t until weeks later, when cleaning crews arrived to ready the apartment for new tenants, that she was discovered.
Heartbroken and neglected, she was found locked in a small crate in a corner of the filthy kitchen.
When found, she was covered in her own feces and urine; her fur was so matted she could barely move. There was no food or water left for her; she was extremely emaciated and weighed only seven pounds.
And if her starved condition wasn’t heartbreaking enough, veterinarians also discovered she is missing one of her back feet; how this or when this occurred is unclear.
Recovery begins:
The staff quickly sprang into action to attend to her both her physical and emotional needs. It started with a bath – washing away what seemed to be a lifetime of neglect. Her mats were cut off, the feces and urine washed away, and there a little dog feeling so much more comfortable emerged.
She has now been started on a refeeding program and is being monitored very carefully to help her safely gain weight and feel healthier.
A Promise:
This little dog will never find herself in this situation again. A very sweet contest is currently ongoing, and that is to pick a new name while donating to help provide her the care she needs to heal. The person who suggests the best name will win an AHS limited edition t-shirt.
