On December 30, a handsome, five-year-old German shepherd wandered onto the grounds of Akron’s Summit County Animal Control. No one knew where she came from, but the dog was in excellent physical condition, and more than likely rescuers think she had been dumped in front of the shelter.
According to the Akron Beacon Journal, once the dog was brought into the shelter, she was scanned for a microchip, and one was found. The chip, however showed limited information and a readout like this had never been seen before by the staff:
Country:POL
616093900356799
There was no phone number for the microchip brand, nor was there any information about the owner or a phone number to call should the pet be lost. After an extensive investigation, researchers found the chip and the dog originated in Poland.
The staff at the shelter were not able to find anymore information on the dog, but were convinced that someone had likely spent a lot of money bringing the dog over to the United States.
The dog obviously needed a name, and veterinary technician Rhonda Kesek named the dog Paczki – a popular Polish doughnut served before Lent.
I was hungry and she was Polish!

Carrie Goffee, the animal shelter’s office manager, posted the dog’s story and her photos on social media, hoping her owner would come forward or someone would recognize the dog and share some information about the dog’s past.
It is possible, Paczki had been born and bred in Poland, and then brought to the United States via the military.
Despite many talented researchers and animal advocates trying to trace the microchip and the appropriate company, all leads led to dead ends. Since Poland is a low-risk country for rabies, the dog would not have needed an import permit when arriving in the United States.
Social media responses did help to piece together a little of the dog’s past. One woman said her ex-boyfriend had purchased the dog from a breeder in Columbus, and then the dog had been named Tess. And the dog did respond to the name. Supposedly the dog had been used for breeding, and the woman’s boyfriend had given the dog to an elderly woman one week later.
No matter however, because Paczki has been adopted since her owner never showed up to claim her. And now, given the named Zoey, the new family continues to bond and as we always hope – will live a charmed life together.
