In Winslow, Arizona, area residents are outraged about the recent video circulating on social media showing a beloved dog who would wander the streets collecting treats and interacting with students and teachers, being cruelly dragged away bleeding as a result of an Animal Control officer use of a catch-pole.
According to AZ Central, the video showed a dog named Raider, who lives at the end of the street with his owner and who wandered the neighborhood almost every day, was dragged away by the officer who used a metal cable fastened around the dog’s neck. It had been local resident, Jim Sundwall, who videoed the disturbing incident and then posted it to social media. Raider could be seen shaking and struggling to breathe as the officer dragged the dog on his side to the truck.
Prior to the incident, Sundwall stated the officer told him Raider had tried to bite someone, but neighbors expressed doubt since the dog would come in contact with hundreds of people, and there had never been a complaint.
The community joined together and wanted answers – Raider is an older dog and not aggressive at all.
And so to help Raider, a fundraiser has been started by a community support group, “The Cherry Bombs” – they are now raising funds to help build a fence around Raider’s home so he will no longer be at risk and remain safe. So far, the community group as raised more than $1,200 and are working on the best area to construct the fence.
Fortunately, Raider has been returned to his owner; the dog was not injured.
The Winslow Police Department has since stated the Animal Control employee had been placed on administrative leave and an investigation is underway.
