A heartbreaking photo of a mother dog sitting in an open suitcase with her five puppies cuddled up alongside of her has gone viral on social media. The dogs were discovered in Smithfield, North Carolina on Monday.
It had been a Good Samaritan who reportedly found the suitcase moving in the road and brought it to the nearest fire department. After unzipping the case, everyone was surprised to discover a dog pop up along with a litter of her recent newborns.
Fortunately, weather conditions were reported as cloudy with moderate temperatures. It is not known how long the family had been locked in the suitcase or who would have done such an inhumane and senseless act of animal cruelty.
The canine family has been taken to Johnston County Animal Shelter in Smithfield. When Pet Rescue Report spoke to the shelter, we were advised the case is now under investigation, and no updates would be given at this time, except to assure everyone the mother dog and her five puppies are currently being cared for at the shelter.
Please let officers do their work and find the person(s) responsible for this terrible act of animal cruelty and brought to justice. If you have any information or recognize this dog, please contact the shelter at (919) 934-8474 or email [email protected].
At this time the dogs are not available for adoption.
