In Oklahoma City, the director of an animal rescue organization Street Dog Rescue & Recovery, Mitzi Brogdon, had been preparing to leave an area near Southeast 29th Street, after rescuing two strays dogs in need of help, when she spotted a dog standing by herself in a parking lot next to a cell tower.
When Brogdon stopped with the intention of offering the dog some dogfood, the friendly pup walked right up to her. That’s when the woman spotted a large group of puppies peeking out of an old log next to the cell tower.
All together, there were 17 dogs – the two-year-old mom, 14 puppies believed to be eight-weeks-old and two more puppies believed to be four months of age.
The mother dog was named Dolly, and it was later determined the puppies had been from three different litters. Dolly had been caring for her puppies for a long time and protected them from predators and inclement weather. It is not known how long Dolly had been out on her own, but the puppies had depended on their mother for survival.
And then came the issue of rescuing all of the puppies and keeping them vetted, fed and supported until they were ready to be adopted. The puppies were all friendly, indicating they had been around humans before, but who could have been so heartless as to abandon all of them and their mother?
Brogdon appealed to other rescues for help, and Forever Yours Dog Rescue, 405 Animal Rescue, The Fuzzy Friends Fund, and Safe Haven Animal Rescue all stepped forward.
The puppies are waiting for their new homes, and Dolly who is extremely friendly and sweet is ready to be spoiled and loved.
It is important to note that these are the lucky ones – the puppies and their mothers because they were rescued by an incredible woman. None of this would have occurred if Dolly’s owner had the wherewithal to have had her dog spayed. Be responsible – spay and neuter your pets.
