If one ever thinks they have heard every possible type of animal neglect and cruelty, sadly another heinous act always comes out to break our hearts. In this case, a man from Walthamstow, a town in London, left his Rottweiler in the car on one of the hottest days of the year while he went to comfortably sleep the night away in an air conditioned hotel.
According to ITVNews, Michael Haye, 39, has been banned from owning any pets for the next ten years after admitting in court that he left his dog, Shay, in the car parking lot, as temperatures climbed to 100 degrees Fahrenheit while he went inside to a Premier Inn hotel in South Mimms.
It had been a Good Samaritan who spotted the dog in distress in the vehicle during the middle of the day on July 18, 2022. The weather reporters in the area had already issued an extreme heat warning. When police arrived, they found Shay still alive, but foaming at the mouth and in need of emergency care. The dog was barely conscious and too weak to walk.
Officers gently doused Shay with cool water and hurried the dog to an emergency veterinary hospital where the dog’s temperature had registered over 107 degrees Fahrenheit.
When Haye was found, he said he had fallen asleep in the hotel and had left the dog with water and a dog bowl which had both been found in the “scorching vehicle” dry and too hot to touch.
Amazingly, Shay has recovered and will be available for adoption.
As for his owner, Haye was also fined, ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and pay all costs Shay accumulated for his care.
And now as the warm weather quickly approaches, please DO NOT leave your pets in any vehicle unattended.
