More heartwarming updates for German shepherd found wandering the streets of Detroit carrying her stuffy

Admin

Nikki spent months on the streets of Detroit before Almost Home Animal Rescue League and South Lyon Murphy Lost Animal Recovery saved her; no one knows how long she had walked through the cold weather carrying her toy in her mouth, but she had done her best just to survive.

Gail Montgomery, the cofounder of Almost Home Animal Rescue League, described how she had received private messages and photos of the dog carrying the stuffed toy in her mouth. Someone had taken the dog’s picture as she walked in the pouring rain still holding onto the toy.

Montgomery had employed the help of South Lyon Murphy Lost Animal Recovery for help, and by the next afternoon, Nikki was resting comfortably. The story of the dog’s past indicated her owner had died, and all she had was the generosity and kindness of strangers to occasionally feed her.

Nikki’s first visit to the veterinarian indicated just how difficult life had been on the streets for her. To stave off her hunger, she had eaten plastic bags, sticks and bones. She was also heartworm positive. In fact, veterinarians originally suspected that Nikki was pregnant because of the size of her belly; that turned out to be the result from all the trash she had eaten.

Nikki has been making great strides in her health. She is on a balanced diet of chicken and rice and of course a steady diet of love and care. She still does love her stuffy, but now she has a stuffed dragon she likes.

This sweet girl continues to get more relaxed and responds so well to kindness. She’s been to the spa, loves her home, and we wish Nikki the best life any dog could wish for now.
