A six-month-old puppy appeared to be fine; his smiling face is so adorable, but the wound on his neck was horrific, and he had been left to suffer for a long time.
Just one week ago, the Pennsylvania SPCA Law Enforcement team received a call from a local veterinary office. The puppy, named Prince, had been brought to their location with an embedded collar and was in need of immediate medical care. Prince’s owner agreed to surrender the puppy, and his journey to healing began.
The veterinary hospital found a large horizontal wound along his neck described as consistent with an embedded collar; someone had already removed the collar before the vet visit. The deep wound had been oozing and scarring had been evident around the edges.
As puppies grow, if their collars are not adjusted they become tighter and tighter. Eventually, they become so tight they create wounds, and the skin begins to grow around them. That is likely what happened in this case.

Prince was then sedated and his wound cleaned, debrided, flushed and bandages applied. He would need frequent sedation to change his bandages and aid in his recovery. One can only imagine how he must have been suffering.
The Pennsylvania SPCA has since placed Prince in a foster home, and he only has to return to the shelter for bandage changes. He is described as a “gentle soul.” It is hoped he has forgotten the terrible pain not so long ago in his past.
