Traumatized bonded German shepherds’ situation at California shelter breaking hearts

Admin

At the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter, two German shepherds arrived at the shelter together as strays on June 4, 2023. The dogs were promptly separated [neither dog had been altered or spayed] and placed in two different kennels, and both dogs are desperately missing each other.

And now the dogs named Dusty and Kali are in grave danger of being euthanized because of the time they have already spent in the shelter and the lack of families wanting to adopt the larger dogs. Both dogs have been described as friendly.

Dusty is not doing well in his kennel, and it is feared he has been feeling quite ill. Volunteers at the shelter feel the emotional and physical separation from Kali has been having a terrible strain on Dusty’s well-being and health.

Dusty’s PetHarbor adoption listing:

DUSTY – ID#A556053

My name is Dusty and I am an unaltered male, black and tan German Shepherd Dog. Shelter staff think I am about 3 years old. I have been at the shelter since Jun 04, 2023.

Kali’s PetHarbor adoption listing:

KALI – ID#A556052

My name is Kali and I am an unaltered female, black and tan German Shepherd Dog. Shelter staff think I am about 3 years old. I have been at the shelter since Jun 04, 2023.

Please understand the shelter is overwhelmed and understaffed. They are at least 100 dogs over capacity and the staff is down to less than 10 because they can’t keep employees. This is the same problem everywhere. Please consider volunteering, fostering, adopting or making a donation to help save lives. It’s not the staff at the shelter who should be blamed – neutering and spaying dogs would help to stop the terrible overcrowding in our county shelters across the country.

Contact the shelter for more information on the health, personalities and dispositions of the dogs.
