Frightened puppy too scared to walk spotted in wheelbarrow at shelter about to be euthanized saved just in time

Admin

At a local animal shelter in Dallas, overcrowded conditions continue to put all dogs, including purebreds and puppies, at risk of euthanasia. And so it was a very frightened young golden retriever named Darla who was next on the list to die.

As the staff tried to lead Darla down the hall to the dimly lit room where her life would end, the eight-month-old puppy was too scared to even walk, and so she was gently loaded into a wheelbarrow for her heartbreaking fate.

A wheelbarrow holding an 8-month old Golden Retriever puppy was making its way across a south Texas shelter on a hot day. The shelter, like so many across Texas, was overcrowded, and being ultra-shy made the puppy at risk. With legs too afraid to walk, she was placed in the wheelbarrow in order to be euthanized.

At that same time, volunteers from Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) had been at the shelter rescuing as many dogs as they could, when they spotted Darla in the wheelbarrow.

This Texas shelter and the APA! team joined forces to rescue the puppy. The rescuers were confident that Darla would be able to come out of her shell.

Once rescued, Darla was sent to the organization’s partner veterinarian where she was examined. It was Mile High Lab Rescue in Denver, Colorado who offered to help Darla. This young pup is now safe and is already looking forward to her new life.

She’s settled into her foster home here in Colorado and learning how it feels to be loved and safe.

Darla is currently available for adoption To learn more about adopting her, or any of our other available dogs, visit our website: mhlrm.com

How sad to think Darla’s young life could have been snuffed out.

As an extra aside, APA! is where my son adopted his dog, Gotham nearly nine years ago. The black Lab/shepherd and ChowChow mix continues to live her best life in New York City.
