Family who lost their apartment and living in car forced to surrender their 2 loving dogs to crowded shelter

Admin

At the Carson Animal Care in California, a mother and son dogs – Mamma and her son Ace, are now on the final list to be euthanized because of the overcrowded conditions at the shelter.

Their story is heartbreaking, and we hope by sharing, either a rescue group or a family will want to help these two before it’s too later. The two lived in an apartment with their family for years, and the owner said the dogs had been great with other dogs and cats. Mamma is housebroken, crate trained, knows lots of commands, tricks and loves to be with little children.

She’s been amazing with the little children and something special about her is she would wait til the kids came home and watch and whine when she sees the babies are crying because she cares about them so much.

She’s never bitten anyone, she’s only guarded and she will growl at other aggressive dogs when she’s fearful.

The family lost their apartment, and they had been living in their car with Mamma and Ace. When Animal Control arrived, officers gave the woman a warning and forced her to surrender the dogs to the shelter. Mamma has been reported as failing her assessment, and the shelter has recommended she be euthanized, but the problem is – Mamma has been terrified of the shelter environment and needs a chance out of the shelter and a safe place to decompress.

No doubt that Mamma needs a miracle, but we know there is someone who will want to give this sweetheart another chance.

Included below is one of her assessments for behavior by the shelter:

A5557285(intact) Mama:

“Mama was near the front of the kennel with a neutral demeanor as the handlers approached. Mama was weary of the lead handler growling and barking at them defensively with a tense demeanor and a stern gaze. The lead handler stepped out of sight from Mama and she appeared more at ease with the other handler. Mama sniffed the handler’s hand and allowed him to leash and remove Mama from the kennel. Mama walked ahead of the handler with no pull on the leash by passing the dogs along the way. Once in the catch pen Mama was collared, leashed, and muzzled without incident. Mama gave a neutral greeting at the barrier and was allowed into the play yard. Mama tolerated the dogs greeting with a slightly tense body then moved on. Mama bypassed the dogs and moved to the far end of the play yards away from the dogs at play and the handlers. Mama kept to herself avoidant of the dogs as they passed by moving away from them. Mama maintained her solitude for some time and would become tense and bark defensively at one of the handlers as they navigated the yard. Mama became more social with the calmer dogs exchanging sniffs and exploring together briefly. Mama displayed low energy and no play style at this time.”
