In Putnam County, authorities with the Putnam County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), responded to a report of animal neglect and cruelty on Saturday in the town of Patterson.
According to the organization’s social media page, the nine-year-old miniature poodle was unable to see or walk properly because of extreme neglect and matting in front of his eyes and around his legs. The dog had a strong odor of feces and urine. He was transported to the Putnam County SPCA Dog Control Division to the Guardian Veterinary Specialists in Brewster for immediate care.
The dog named Pierre weighed 13.9 pounds and had more than eight pounds of feces and urine soaked matting removed from his body. Staff members at the veterinary hospital spent over two hours shaving away the matting. He is currently still receiving care at the animal hospital, and he is reported to be doing very well.
The dog owner, Brian Edwards, has been charged with animal cruelty by Putnam County SPCA Detectives and will be arraigned in the Town of Patterson Justice Court on August 30, 2023.
