At the Lifeline Animal Project in Atlanta, Georgia, the staff penned an impassioned note to the homeless owner of an eight-month-old puppy who had been abandoned at the rescue in early August.
On the group’s Facebook page, the rescue wanted to make sure the owner knew the puppy named Milo was safe and was being well-cared for:
we found your dog right where you left him in a space where he wouldn’t get hit by a care or harmed when wandering freely in search of sanctuary.
The note accompanying Milo had been left on August 17 with the owner explaining why the dog had been left at the sanctuary and included pertinent information about the dog including his health, his name and how he loves to cuddle:
Please do not judge me on this single act alone. I am simply a human being trying to do what’s best for my puppy. I have tried rehoming and searching for fosters. I cannot support him or myself. This is the only way. I know you will take him, and he’s safe. He’s a sweetheart and very well-mannered and trained.
The shelter stated they had brought the puppy in, performed an intake exam, and he joined the other dogs in the shelter. They also wanted to reunite the two and offered more help.
Reading the opening lines, we thought of how it must have felt for you to write that message as you left your loved one behind. What a brave act of self-sacrifice to risk scorn and judgment while trying to do what was best for Milo, to make sure that he would be safe, would be able to get veterinary care, and would have food, water, and a roof over his head.
While the shelter was not able to reunite Milo with his owner, sharing the puppy’s story and the incredible reach of social media, a wonderful family stepped forward to adopt this perfect puppy. Yes, there are many more perfect fur covered friends at the shelter who would also love to find homes, so if it’s in your heart, please adopt your next best friend. An open letter to Milo’s owner.
We found your dog right where you left him in a space where he wouldn’t get hit by a car or harmed when wandering freely in search of sanctuary.
Our shelter team found him as they came into the shelter for the morning shift and brought him into the building while he waited for his turn for his intake exam. After intake, he joined the hundreds of other dogs in our shelter. We also found the note you left. Because of your note, we knew Milo’s name, how old he is, that he has been friends with other dogs and cats, and that he is very obviously loved. We love him, too, and will do everything in our power to help him go home. If you are reading this and there’s any chance that we can help reunite you with Milo and support both of you, please reach out to our team at [email protected]. You will be met with compassion and understanding. Milo deserves the safety and security of a home, and so do you.
If you are a member of our community who is reading this, Milo is just one of the many dogs in our care who have loving families who are facing tough decisions and are trying to do what is best for their beloved pets. The struggle animals face is directly tied to the hardships their families face. If you are in a position to help, please consider becoming a foster parent. There are many fostering opportunities available, including fostering a pet who just needs a temporary home until they can be reunited with their family. Visit LifeLineAnimal.org/foster to learn more. If you can’t bring a pet home right now, please make a donation to our Stay Together Fund (LifeLineAnimal.org/stay-together) to help families facing financial hardships receive veterinary care that their pets need for them to stay together.
