An Arizona woman faces animal cruelty charges after authorities say she abandoned her elderly, nearly blind dog on the side of the road in Benson late last month. On Wednesday, Karen Black, was charged with animal cruelty.
On August 26, in the area of I-10 and Skyline Road, Benson an elderly dog with a vision impairment was located walking down the exit ramp. It had been Sheriff Dannels and his wife, Nickie, who spotted the dog and safely rescued the frightened pup.
A Cochise County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Officer was able to determine the dog had been microchipped with the last registered owner out of Maricopa County. Numerous calls and messages by CCSO Animal Control were left for the owner with no response.
According to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, Phoenix resident, Karen Black, 62, initially denied she had ever been in Cochise County, but finally admitted to investigators that she had left the dog alongside I-10; Additional charges include failing to notify law enforcement and ignoring attempts to reach out to her.
The dog is currently in the care of a shelter and will remain there until the case is adjudicated.
