Honey was a returned shelter dog from a mega adoption event in Orange County, Florida at the Hillsborough County shelter. She had been at the shelter for two months, surrendered by her family after five years because a child had been “allergic.” After a mega adoption event, Honey was finally adopted, however that only lasted two days; her new family returned her for being “boring.”
CITIZEN ADOPTED HONEY FROM MEGA ADOPTION EVENT. THEY ARE RETURNING THE DOG DUE TO THE DOG NOT BEING THE RIGHT FIT FOR THEIR HOUSEHOLD. THEY FELT THE DOG ISN’T VERY INTERACTIVE AND DOESN’T HAVE MUCH OF A PERSONALITY LIKE THEY HAD HOPED.
And just as sad, the family returning Honey stated their son grew very attached to Honey even if she was an “older dull dog.” Their youngest daughter however, had hoped for a more playful friend.
Fortunately, her heartbreaking story garnered the attention of thousands of people on social media. It was then Julie Bassett, owner of Husky Life Rescue in Lakeland stepped in to help the 10-year-old dog.
It turned out, however it just wasn’t that Honey was a senior; she had serious physical issues, and she was so weak, rescuers had to carry her to their car and rush her to the North Polk Animal Hospital.
Her diagnosis was troubling; veterinarians were not even sure the dog was going to survive. She had a serious UTI and a severe kennel cough, and she really wasn’t 10 years of age – she was estimated to be 15 years old.
Honey has been administered medications to successfully address pancreatitis, and she has been doing much better. She is expected to recover.
And now for the endearing news about this special senior. The veterinary staff describe her as “sweet as honey.” She enjoys being cuddled, and when the staff sit on the floor, Honey loves to “plop her head right down there, and she wants to have her belly rubs and all of that.”

Honey is not available for adoption at this time. She will need time to heal and adjust to her situation. The organization will post updates and inform you if or when she may be available for adoption.
