In Otsego County, Michigan, a woman was viciously attacked by the family dog after the dog had been given a THC gummy. The dog was not an aggressive breed and was with the family for four years.
According to 9&10News, Melissa FitzGerald, the director of Otsego County Animal Control, states many people are unaware of the dangers and side effects of giving a pet THC. She stated the dog had become very aggressive, and it “was a bad scene.” The breed of dog or what happened to the dog was not made available.
CBDDogHealth states that THC and CBD are not fatal to pets and in carefully monitored situations under the advice and supervision of a licensed veterinarian, may be helpful. Large doses however, consumed by a pet, may result in serious side effects – also known as intoxication. Since dogs have more cannabinoid receptors than humans, they are more sensitive to the effects.
Effects of THC intoxication include:
- Lack of coordination/Wobbly gait (also called Static Ataxia)
- Abnormal activity levels
- Acting sedated OR hyperactive depending on what kind of cannabis they consumed
- Dilated pupils
- Increased vocal behavior
- Excessive drooling
- Vomiting
- Urine Leakage
- Increased heart rate
- Blood pressure changes
- Decreased respiratory rate

The Otsego County Animal Control is telling people to keep their marijuana out of a pet’s reach and watch out for side effects.
