A short clip on TikTok has all of us reaching for tissues after watching a young dog’s reaction to having been surrendered by hers family and not understanding what had happened and why? This is what it looks like when a dog is surrendered. It’s heartbreaking for us to watch them thinking you will return. #dog #rescue #sos #sad

And here we meet this little dog who was turned in to a rescue after two years because she was too “annoying and needy.” Yes, that’s correct; one can only imagine her previous owners would do fine with a pet rock!

The caption to the video, which has garnered more than 1.3 million views starts with:

this is what it looks like when you decide you don’t want your dog after two years and drop her off at a shelter.

they frantically paw at the door, and look everywhere for you.

And as the poor pup’s complete confusion continued:

She then laid with her things thinking you would be right back for over an hour, still hopeful that you were coming back to take her home.

Now the rescue gets to comfort her, and pick up the pieces of her broken heart, all because she was “too much work” and you didn’t want to deal with her.

Fortunately, this little dog is safe with a rescue, and they will work with her issues and hopefully find a new home where she won’t be “too much trouble.” We only wish this was just one isolated case, but this continues to occur every day, almost every hour and every place. And the saddest part? Not all surrendered and homeless dogs have this kind of luck – the kind where someone as compassionate and as kind as this person, steps in to foster a pet until they can be adopted.

According to the ASPCA, the Humane Society, Bestfriends.org, Orvis and PetPedia, an estimated 78 million dogs are owned as pets in the U.S. Every year 3.3 million dogs enter shelters, and 670,000 are euthanized.

Heartbreaking statistics:

On average, 45% of cats who enter shelters are euthanized. For feral cats, that number leaps up to nearly 100%.

93% of pit bulls in shelters are euthanized because of the harmful stereotype they are an aggressive breed.

More than 10 million animals die from abuse in the United States. Dogs make up 65% of all abused animals.

We can do better. Don’t shop when you can adopt. If you see something, say something.
