A very sweet dog had been abandoned by his owner; his body had been wasting away because a heartless person had chosen to walk away from him. Fortunately, the Tunica Humane Society, located in Tunica, Mississippi stepped forward to help Wilbur; for days the dog had been in the care of their veterinarian partner.
It had been just five days ago when a report about an abandoned dog on the south end of the county had been received. When staff members drove up, they spotted a “Beware of Dog” sign posted, but the sign was no more than a few words. What the rescuers found was not intimidating; the frightened dog was starved, neglected and brokenhearted. His family had abandoned him.
He barked and he circled and he gave me an untrusting eye. Luckily, food was my best defense because the poor thing was starving to death. After a few minutes of sitting and feeding him, I slipped a leash on his neck and pulled him into a kennel.
He was immediately taken to the veterinarian office; his skull had sunk in over his eyes and was very weak in his lower extremities. He was given a name – Wilbur, and from the moment he was rescued, everyone would fight to give him back some quality of life.
And it was to be on Saturday morning that Wilbur was to be released from the veterinarian’s office, but despite numerous pleas to foster him, no one had volunteered to foster him. There had been multiple shares and comments on the day Wilbur had been rescued, but suddenly silence – not one offer to take him home and care for him while he recuperated.
Last post tonight. Going to bed with a heavy heart for wilbur. No one has shown any interest in fostering this sweet dog for us…
i will be picking wilbur up from the vet’s office in the morning. we have no choice but to bring him back to our crowded shelter. they have done all they can for him right now. sitting in boarding is not where he needs to be. only time and tender loving care will bring this dog back from the neglect he has endured.
There was not any open kennel at the shelter, and volunteers and staff worried on Sunday afternoon where they could even settle Wilbur during his recuperation time.
All we need is ONE adoption at our shelter tomorrow. Just one open kennel. To pave the way for Wilbur.
And then the sun rose and shined, and Saturday began. “Wilbur’s tears had touched a whole bunch of hearts.” Multiple people had contacted the shelter wanting to help Wilbur; some from across the country. Would be rescuers from as far away as Florida, Colorado and even Oregon reached out.
Luckily, an amazing foster family from the area stepped out, and it was Rachel who agreed to meet Wilbur before the dog headed back to the shelter.
That’s all it took. She loved Wilbur instantly. He really is a very special dog. Our biggest concern was the 4 large dogs they already have at home. After talking to Rachel about her dogs, I felt in my heart Wilbur would do just fine.
So far everything is working out; the other dogs have accepted Wilbur, and together, the entire family has already settled in. Rachel and her family are even thinking about adopting Wilbur.
