Princesa is a two-year-old German shepherd, and she has a heartbreaking story to tell. Still, with a bit of resilience and kind staff and handlers at the South L.A. Animal Shelter, this dog will hopefully defy the odds.
Princesa was surrendered to the shelter on Tuesday because her family was moving. Of course, who could explain to her that she was no longer wanted? Who could explain to her that the puppies she recently delivered and cared for were taken away from her, and who could explain to her why she was at such a loud and scary place?
Upon arrival, the frightened shepherd lunged at one of the employees; and together with being an owner surrender and a frightened dog, she was escalated to the top of the euthanasia list. But wait! Time passed and three days later, Princesa had calmed down. Of course she was still timid, but when a handler offered her some treats, she took them very carefully. Led into the play yard, she sought out companionship with other dogs and even walked over to the handler again – seeking out treats, love and gentle pets.
