Life on the Streets: A Stray Dog’s Longing
Stray dogs wander the streets, often driven by hunger and the desperate search for scraps of food.
Every new day they spend on the streets brings a glimmer of hope that they will finally be rescued and brought to a safe environment.
Tanner was one of those stray pups. As he roamed the streets of Houston, Texas, he eagerly awaited the day when someone would notice him and offer him a chance at a better life.
That day eventually arrived when Tanner was rescued and taken to a local shelter. Shortly after his arrival, the shelter staff was delighted to discover that he was a very special dog.
A Heartbreaking Situation: Tanner’s Plight
From the moment he arrived at the shelter, Tanner yearned to find his forever family. However, three weeks passed, and no one expressed interest in adopting him.
The shelter was overcrowded, and tragically, the sweet pup’s name was placed on the euthanasia list.
Madeline Garvis Smith, a local dog advocate, paid a visit to Tanner. She was deeply moved by the affectionate pooch when he wrapped his paws around her, giving her the most heartwarming hugs.
He completely stole her heart, and she knew she had to do everything in her power to save his life.
“He was pure love; almost starved for attention. Putting him back in his kennel was the hardest part, because I knew he was just so lonely. I meet a lot of dogs, but some just pull on your heartstrings more than others. Tanner was one of them,” Garvis Smith shared.
Garvis Smith uses her Instagram account to advocate for shelter pups. On August 26th, 2023, she shared Tanner’s story, wanting everyone to know that he was an incredibly affectionate dog who simply needed someone to give him a chance.
The gentle boy snuggled with all the volunteers he met. He would literally jump into their laps, seeking their affection. Although Tanner was only a year old, he enjoyed being held like a baby.
A Rescue Mission: Finding a Foster Home
Garvis Smith urgently appealed for a local foster home that could provide temporary care for Tanner.
Tanner’s story touched the heart of Kari, a compassionate foster mom who eagerly offered to take Tanner into her home.
When it was time for Tanner to leave the shelter, he seemed to want to say goodbye to his shelter friends. He gently hugged them, as if expressing his gratitude for their care and affection.
As soon as he stepped outside with his foster mom, he began wagging his tail with excitement. He was filled with happiness.
The moment Tanner hopped into the car with Kari, she kissed him. She was both overjoyed and relieved that this precious dog’s life had been saved.
A New Chapter: Heading to New England
After arriving at his foster home, Tanner was initially a bit shy. However, once he realized how loving and caring his foster family was, he warmed up to them and began seeking their attention and affection. He soaked in all the love they showered upon him.
Soon, Tanner will be transported to the Animal Rescue Network of New England, in New Hampshire, where he will continue his search for his forever home.
I have no doubt that this gentle boy will find the perfect family. He has so much love to give, and the family who adopts him will be blessed with his loving hugs every day.
