In a very unusual but truly heartwarming friendship at The Twala Trust Animal Sanctuary in Zimbabwe, South Africa, a kitten and vervet baby monkey comfort each other; and their story has melted more than 15 million hearts on social media.
According to the nonprofit which provides a unique Zimbabwean safe haven for wild and domestic animals in need, the monkey named William and the tiny kitten, Marble didn’t care that they were not the same species. Both, however are orphans, and they are often seen cuddling and kissing each other.
Marble had been the first to arrive at the sanctuary after having been found in a car lot with her two feline brothers. And then there was heartbreak, when the baby monkey was found still attached to his mom who had been killed by a local farmer because she had been eating his crops.
When William, an orphaned vervet monkey, arrived at Twala, he was deeply traumatised by the loss of his mum. Marble the rescue kitten, also orphaned in very traumatic circumstances, seemed to understand that William really needed a friend to comfort him and make him feel safe. Marble and William’s gentle friendship reminds us of the never forgotten and always missed Horace the monkey and his lifelong friend Freddie the rescue cat
When William arrived at the sanctuary, he was undernourished and frightened, but it didn’t take more than a few minutes when the kitten seemed to have realized he needed companionship and some extra special kitten purring attention. She approached William, started to purr, washed his face in kitten style and snuggled with him while his caretaker helped the tiny monkey drink from a tiny baby bottle.
Then the two curled up together for a cuddly nap. Since then the two have become inseparable.
