The Heartache and Reward of Rescue: A Foster’s Journey
While the work of an animal rescuer is undeniably fulfilling, it also comes with its share of emotional challenges. Fostering, in particular, involves opening one’s home and heart to animals in need, knowing that the relationship is often temporary.
Kate, a woman with a lifelong commitment to providing shelter and care for vulnerable animals, has fostered countless furry companions over the years. Each animal has left an imprint on her heart, but one pup, Nacho, made an especially profound and lasting impression.
Nacho’s First Stay: A Deep Connection Forged
The Nebraska Humane Society contacted Kate about a puppy urgently requiring a temporary, loving home. Without hesitation, Kate welcomed the pup, Nacho, into her care.
For the next three months, Nacho and Kate developed an inseparable bond. They spent their days together, seeking out adventures and creating joyful memories.
When a family expressed interest in adopting Nacho, Kate experienced a bittersweet mix of emotions. She was happy that the adorable pup would finally have a permanent family but felt a deep sense of sadness at the prospect of their separation.
Understanding the temporary nature of fostering, Kate accepted the situation and continued her life, eventually relocating to Ohio.
Fate’s Intervention: A Second Chance Encounter
However, fate had a surprising twist in store. While browsing the Nebraska Humane Society’s website, Kate recognized a familiar face among the animals seeking adoption: it was Nacho!
“My friend let me know he was found as a stray. Previous owners were contacted, they didn’t claim him, so I went and adopted him,” Kate shared with Geobeats.
Nacho’s seamless integration into Kate’s life felt incredibly natural. It was as if they were destined to be together, their connection running deep.
Adding to the joy, Kate had another dog, and the two pups quickly became the best of friends, filling her home with happiness and companionship.
“The first night he got home he just felt like he was like ‘I’m home. I’m here. This is where I am meant to be,'” Kate recounted.
A Soul Dog Found: A Bond Meant to Last
During his initial foster stay, Nacho had developed a habit of resting his head on Kate’s shoulder whenever she sat on the couch. When he repeated this behavior after Kate adopted him, she recognized him as her “soul dog,” a companion with whom she shared an unbreakable connection.
“Nacho, he needs to be by a human. He loves to cuddle when I sit and watch TV at night, he’s half on my lap when I’m working. He refuses to sleep anywhere but my bed and he takes over my bed. We are both healing each other,” Kate explained.
And so, as the saying goes, the rest is history.
This remarkable duo is overjoyed by their second chance at companionship, grateful for the opportunity to live their lives to the fullest, together.
