A Desperate Situation Under a Mobile Home
Kosandra Ramirez, a rescuer with ThisIsHouston, responded to a call about a dog in need in Cleveland. Upon arriving at the scene, she found the dog curled up and shivering under a mobile home. He was severely emaciated, his bones protruding through his skin. The dog’s fear prevented Ramirez from immediately approaching him.
A Difficult Rescue and Urgent Medical Care
Ramirez realized the dog was feral, having likely never experienced human kindness. Despite the challenges, she successfully rescued him and rushed him to an emergency veterinary hospital. The dog, later named Chief, was disoriented and frightened. At the hospital, examinations revealed that he had likely been hit by a car at some point. Tests also showed severe anemia and a high white blood cell count. He received IV fluids and other necessary treatments. One night, Chief suffered a seizure, causing great concern, but the medical team managed to stabilize him. Further testing by specialists diagnosed him with hepatozoonosis, a tick-borne disease that, while not curable, can be managed with medication.
From Hospital to Foster Home and Recovery
After a four-week stay at the hospital, Chief was discharged and taken in by Ramirez as a foster. She provided him with consistent care and support. As Chief regained his strength and began to walk, a limp became apparent. He underwent femoral head ostectomy (FHO) surgery, which aided in his full recovery. In his foster home, Chief began to learn how to be a dog, playing with his foster siblings. Although he started to trust Ramirez, he remained hesitant to accept physical affection. With patience and consistent positive reinforcement through training, Chief eventually opened his heart and allowed himself to be loved.
A Dream Come True: A Forever Home
Chief made a remarkable transformation, regaining his health and developing a trusting and affectionate personality. A loving family decided to adopt him, giving him the forever home he deserved. Initially, Chief was still wary in his new environment, hiding in quiet spaces. However, with the unconditional love and patience of his new family, and the companionship of his doggy brother, Lou, Chief gradually came out of his shell. He finally bonded with his forever parents and is now living his best life, a testament to the dedication of rescuers and the transformative power of love and a stable home.
