A Heartbreaking Abandonment

Roxi, a four-year-old English Mastiff, experienced a devastating betrayal when her owner tied her to a light pole and abandoned her on the side of a busy highway in Long Island, New York. Left alone and confused, Roxi could only watch as her owner disappeared, leaving her heartbroken and scared.

A Timely Intervention

Ray Quinones, a Garden City Sanitation worker, spotted Roxi while driving to work. He immediately stopped to help the distressed dog. Upon approaching, he heard Roxi’s cries for help. He observed a bowl of food left beside her and, realizing the gravity of the situation, contacted the police, staying with Roxi until they arrived.

A Note and an Investigation

When officers arrived, they discovered a note left with Roxi, stating her name, breed (incorrectly identified as an American Bullmastiff), age, and that she had been recently fed and given a flea bath. Roxi was taken to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter for examination. While she was underweight, she was otherwise in good health. Authorities were deeply concerned about the dangerous location of her abandonment and launched an investigation, which led to the arrest of Roxi’s former owner.

A New Beginning and a Forever Home

Despite her traumatic experience, Roxi displayed a sweet and gentle nature at the shelter. Her story touched many people, leading to numerous adoption inquiries. John and Sandy Reeve, who had recently lost their Mastiff, Hannah, were particularly drawn to Roxi, as she resembled their beloved pet. Despite the shelter initially not accepting further applications, the Reeves’ story resonated with the staff, who allowed them to meet Roxi. During their meeting, Roxi connected strongly with Mr. Reeve, placing her head on his lap. The staff recognized the special bond and approved their adoption application. On July 15, 2024, Roxi found her forever home with the Reeves in Aquebogue, New York. She quickly settled into her new life, enjoying the love of her new family and the freedom of their three-acre waterfront property. Roxi’s story is a testament to the resilience of animals and the kindness of those who offer them a second chance.
