Ten-year-old Chuey was found walking aimlessly along the sidewalk; pedestrians walked around him so as not to step on the 12-pound neglected dog; that is until he was picked up by animal control officers and brought to the East Valley Shelter in Van Nuys, California.
Staff members named him Chuey, and the shelter veterinarians suspect the 10-year-old ShihTzu has been badly neglected. His right eye has a damaged cornea with crusting and exposure keratitis, and his prognosis suggest his eyes to be painful and the best outcome would be enucleation. His left eye is dry and a cataract is forming. He appears to be blind. He has infections in both of his ears. And if that wasn’t enough, Chuey is missing teeth and suffers from dental disease. Where were his owners?
And there is Chuey – staff and volunteers tell us he has a wonderful disposition – in spite of the prolonged neglect!
The staff at the shelter have sent out a Blue Alert and email blast asking for an approved rescue organization or experienced dog person for help.
