Some days we just have to shake our heads and be thankful we have lots of ways to help the voiceless, but nevertheless, we do understand everyone’s frustration.
Case in point! A family in Glenn Heights, Texas, surrendered their dog to the Glenn Heights Animal Shelter on Monday because she “got bigger than they wanted.” This charming dog is about a year-and-a-half-old and is certainly eagerly awaiting a new home where she won’t be judged by her size.
Volunteers and staff have stated she does well with other dogs, however she has not been tested with livestock or cats.
For our readers interested in adopting, Great Pyrenees have a life span between 10 – 12 years of age. Their height is generally between 27 and 32 inches tall. Males average 100 – 160 pounds, while females average between 85 and 110 pounds. They are known to be great family dogs and are very affectionate with their families – also known to be protective of children and other pets. They are high-maintenance as to grooming and training.
These dogs were originally bred to keep wolves and other predators away from the sheep on the snowy Pyrenees mountains.
Most Great Pyrenees reach their full adult height and weight around a year old.
For anyone interested in bringing one of these dogs home, please be well prepared to train them, which according to experts can be challenging because of their intelligence and independence. They are known to bark frequently, but working with these dogs and giving them positive reinforcement while training will reward a Great Pyrenees’ family with love, protection and companionship.
