Over the weekend, a call came into Stray Rescue of St, Louis from a Good Samaritan who had found a small dog on the side of the road. At first, it was thought the dog had been hit by a car, but when volunteers arrived from the rescue organization, they immediately recognized the strong odor of a raging infection.
Upon closer examination, the smell was coming from a ruptured mammary tumor. The 25-pound pup was given the name Nugget, and she was immediately administered antibiotics to help get the raging infection under control. The good news – although Nugget was very scared by everything around her happening all at once, she was hungry and eagerly ate the food offered to her. That promised to be a good sign.
Nugget was extremely anemic and required an emergency blood transfusion. It was Fury, one of the sweetest adoptable dogs at the rescue who donated his blood to save her life. What a hero!
On Tuesday morning, Nugget underwent surgery.
She is going to be so happy to wake up and have this painful tumor she’s been living with – for who knows how long – gone. These don’t grow overnight. And we don’t want to miss the opportunity to say when dogs are spayed at a young age, the likelihood of this happening to them is very low. Spaying your female dogs keeps them from having to give birth to puppies during an overpopulation crisis, AND it keeps them healthy so problems like pyometra, breast cancer, and more health issues don’t arise later in life.

Nugget is now post surgery and this little breast cancer survivor has a large drain where the tumor was removed. She woke up and is sending out thanks to everyone rooting for her. We know she is going to feel so much better – the worst is behind her.
Please donate, any size donation is so appreciated (including nugget sized!) Strayrescue.org/Nugget
