Dog starved to the brink of death

The owner of a severely starving dog in Wisconsin, found in a rural area in the Town of Sherman earlier this month, was arrested late Monday evening. According to a statement by the Humane Society and Boyceville Police Department, the suspect has been charged with animal cruelty.

“Boyceville, WI: We are pleased to share that an arrest was made late yesterday in the case of the dog we named Gabriel. The details of the case will become clear in time, but we know that the individual in question was arrested for failure to provide food and drink (under Wisconsin Statute 951.13), a Class A Misdemeanor and intentional mistreatment of an animal resulting in disfigurement (under Wisconsin Statute 951.02), a Class I Felony. All inquiries regarding this matter should be directed to the Boyceville Police Department.”

The Boyceville police report stated the suspect, Anne Marie Lehl, 29, originally claimed to have found the dog, named Gabriel, as a stray. Police have since determined Lehl owned the dog and kept him in her home.

Gabriel, a mixed breed is estimated to be two-years-old.  When first brought to the shelter, he could barely stand and weighed in at 23.5 pounds – 40% of what a dog his breed and build should weigh.

“Gabriel is now up to 44lbs! That means he has gained about 20lbs since arriving at our shelter 10 days ago! As you can tell in the video, he is doing well. His playful personality has the staff laughing daily at his antics… such a fun-loving goofball…”

Follow Gabriel’s progress on Facebook. There have been numerous offers for adoption, but he still needs more recovery time. Why not adopt another dog in need and say Gabriel sent you? Be the voice for those who cannot speak.
