In the area of Casa Grande, Arizona, a bystander spotted a U-Haul truck pull over who pushed Zeus out. They told the dog to sit and stay. Then the heartless people got back in the truck and drove off; Zeus ran his fastest to follow his “owners.” And for days, Zeus waited at the shelter for help – his infected tumor draining on the shelter cage’s floor.
According to Rubicon Rescue, who saved the dog with a huge tumor on his neck from Pinal Animal Care & Control, they have since reached out to the woman who saw the dog being abandoned, and will do everything to find and prosecute his former owners.
When the rescue organization arrived at the shelter on Thursday evening, Zeus had been waiting patiently on his bed.
“He let us harness him, and was VERY happy to be leaving the pound. All the while, leaving a trail of blood and pus all the way to the car…,” the rescue posted on their Facebook page recounting Zeus’ heartbreaking story.
On the dog’s arrival at San Tan Animal Hospital, veterinarians examined the mass on his neck – the size of a small watermelon. It was so heavy, the weight of the tumor pulled down Zeus’ ear. When he walks, it bumps on curbs, and he is unable to even sniff without dragging the mass.
Zeus is scheduled for surgery on Monday morning, and while under anesthesia he will have blood work performed, be neutered and have a small granuloma on his back foot removed. He has been vaccinated, has tested negative for heartworm and tick fever; he also has been started on an extensive antibiotic regimen. Although the shelter ages Zeus as 12-years-old, it is thought he is closer to six to eight years of age.
Check out Zeus’ photos and his freedom video; how could anyone be so heartless as to abandon him like this?
