The Madison Township Police Department in Groveport, Ohio removed a large alligator on Friday that had been living in a man’s basement for 25 years.
“There’s some things they just don’t teach you in the Police Academy,” the department posted on their Facebook page along with several photos of officers capturing the alligator.
The police department received a call from paramedics who had responded to the home and reported the gator in the basement. He had been living in a makeshift tub with water and a sump pump. His owner, Dusty Rhoades stated he had purchased the gator named Alli at a reptile flea market. At the time, Alli was barely a foot long, but gators do grow. An alligator will grow to the size of their enclosure.
Rhoades did not have a license to keep exotic animals, but voluntarily surrendered Alli to authorities. A veterinarian examination of the reptile found it to be in acceptable health for living in captivity.
And it will be a happy ending for Alli – he/she won’t become a pair of shoes or a purse. Alli is headed for an alligator sanctuary in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where he can grow to his potential and enjoy the warmer weather.
