A pregnant dog that adopted an orphaned monkey after its mother was poisoned in Chakki Mor, Solan in northern India was captured in poignant photographs by Prakash Badal. The talented photographer had initially intended to photograph birds.
According to the Daily Mail, the 10-day-old monkey was orphaned after villagers poisoned its mother in order to protect their crops. The heartwarming photos showed the baby monkey hugging a heavily pregnant dog; in turn the mother dog seemed to be enjoying the cuddling.
It’s not known how the infant survived, but the mother dog adopted it.
“… I felt that when a mother saw a baby who is very small and left alone and there is nobody to take care of him, the maternal instinct took the initiative to adopt a small baby even if it’s from different species,” Badal stated.
