On Tuesday, June 11, 2024, the South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) and Douglas County Sheriff Deputies responded to an emergency animal rescue situation at a home in Douglas County in Denver, Colorado.
The heartwarming rescue effort involved a 12-week-old, five-pound Pekinese puppy named Archie Bean; the puppy had fallen through an open floor vent on the third floor of a townhome. Archie unintentionally slipped through the uncovered vent after jumping from the bed, leaving him stranded for over three hours. The puppy’s plaintive cries echoed through the metal vents and the entire home.
It was the fire rescue personnel, sheriff deputies and a local plumbing service who all sprang into action to help free the whimpering puppy. It became a complicated project as the crew navigated the multifloored ductwork of the townhome.
In order to get to the puppy, it was decided to cut holes in the home’s walls and ceiling to then be able to access the ductwork. The men were assisted by a small camera pushed through a hole in ductwork to pinpoint Archie’s exact location. Finally, the men spotted the tiny white fluff ball, and he was certainly ready, although frightened to be freed of his metal prison.
The successful rescue of Archie serves as a reminder of the dedication and commitment shown by emergency responders. As Archie happily reunited with his grateful owners, the community celebrated a tale of compassion and resilience in the face of adversity.
Please stop by the Facebook page of the SMFR and give these heroes some “attaboys.” We are so proud of all our officers who always seem to come forward when one of our pets find themselves in shall we say “challenging” circumstances.
Check out the video. It’s awesome.
Thanks to Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Plumbline Services for their assistance.
