Woman stabbed cat and tried to drown it in bathtub in ‘self defense’

In Des Moines, Iowa, a woman tried to kill her cat because the cat was “aggressive” and in self defense stabbed the pet with a kitchen knife and then tried to drown her in a bathtub.

According to the Des Moines Register, Kay Buelow has been accused of stabbing the cat three times with a knife because the cat had tried to bite her when she was taking a shower.

“Officers discovered serious inconsistencies and, upon further investigation, learned that Buelow had stabbed the cat, and then attempted to drown it because she didn’t want to care for it anymore, and she did not believe that a shelter would take the cat,” Des Moines Police stated.

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa rushed to the home on Sunday morning  to find something truly horrifying; the cat was huddled in the bathroom, bleeding from multiple stab wounds, soaking wet, and terrified.

“We rushed the injured cat, and 2 others from the apartment, to the ARL, where our on-call veterinarian was waiting and ready to provide emergency care. The injured cat, whose name is Sophie, was suffering from 3 large stab wounds to her back. Her flesh was raw and bleeding, and the weapon had narrowly missed her spine. Sophie’s neck had also been stabbed and she was suffering from a fifth stab wound near her shoulder.”

Sophie’s wounds were so severe, she required a long line of staples to close the open wounds.. The wound near her shoulder is still very swollen. She is also being monitored for signs of pneumonia from water inhalation. Despite all she has been through, Sophie is an incredibly sweet cat and a model patient.

Buelow has been charged with animal torture and is being help at Polk County Jail in lieu of a $2,000 bond.
