UPDATE: Retired bomb detection dog surrendered to shelter in poor condition needs soft retirement home

UPDATE: The shelter is currently working with Mission K9 Rescue & Ddamien Project and will be committed to finding Grom a retirement home. Many thanks for all of the help.

In Fairfield, California, 11-year-old Grom found himself homeless after his owner surrendered the German shepherd to the Solano County Animal Shelter. Grom spent eight years protecting his handler and serving our country as a bomb detection dog. After his owner’s transfer, it would seem Grom was no longer important – at least not to his former handler.

When surrendered to the shelter, Grom had been suffering from painful infections in both ears, and his coat was sparse on his hind end. According to his previous owner, Grom had lived his working life in an outdoor pen or in the garage. He is currently being treated for his ear infections and has been receiving flea treatment and preventative care by the shelter staff.

From now on, Grom’s future will include heading to a better place. The shelter is in search of a home where he can finally be spoiled as he surely deserves a comfortable and love packed retirement. He is currently being cared for at a foster home.

His fans at the shelter tell us he is very mobile for an old man and loves a few easy short tosses of fetch with his tennis ball on a cool summer morning. Grom knows his commands – sit, lie down, and other communications via hand signals.

For a senior who didn’t seem to have many “creature comforts” in his earlier years, he loves attention which includes pets and rubs and will follow you around the house.

He has yet to have an accident in the home or try to lift his leg on anything. He walks great on leash. Sleeps in his crate at night. He will bark if he’s in his crate at other dogs passing by, but his foster just covers him with a blanket if he’s barking.

As per the shelter, Grom is only available to approved rescue organizations at this time and can not be adopted. Check the last photo for Grom’s ear tattoo.
