In Boston, a dog needed life-saving surgery after eating paper masks. The stray pooch, who was found in an abandoned home with other dogs, had a life-threatening blockage and underwent surgery just in time.
According to Channel 7News, the Animal Rescue League of Boston is caring for the dog now dubbed Gibbs. Upon diagnosis accompanied by an X-ray, nose wires from two discarded paper masks were visible. He is reported to be recovering well and is scheduled to be made available for adoption once he gains weight.
“Masks can smell like food and might attract pets and wildlife,” the Massachusetts Veterinary Medication Association stated. “Animals that ingest these items can experience stomach upset, blockages or worse.”
All masks should be disposed of properly.
“We are urging the public to properly dispose of PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) after a dog found abandoned in a building with two other dogs recently needed emergency surgery to remove the paper masks he had ingested.
When finished with a piece of PPE, it should always be disposed of in a waste container. If not properly disposed of, masks, gloves, and other PPE may become life-threatening hazards, not only to domestic animals but to wildlife as well.Help us share this important message to protect our pets and wildlife brought to you by ARL, Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, & Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association
