Update on faceless dog Dickens: May look different but should have good life

Admin

Shocking photos of a dog seemingly with no face circulated on social media Sunday evening. Animal advocates were asking for help, and Dallas Dog – Rescue.Rehab.Reform refused to turn away. An emergency transfer was set up to bring the “faceless dog” to Dallas. He was named Dickens – a sign of the holiday season and a sign of hope.

Dickens was rushed to the organization’s emergency veterinarian hospital where diagnostic tests were performed. Radiographs confirmed major trauma to his nasal cavity and a rounding on the head of his spleen. In the past, it is likely Dickens had been mistreated – healed fractures of his ribs revealed more trauma at one time. How it happened, it’s more than likely no one will ever know.

On Thursday afternoon, Dicken’s tests were completed.
“First of all he has a transmissible venereal tumor with a major secondary infection. The good news both of these are treatable and we have already started the process!!
The bad news is the infection has eaten away the bone matter on his nose. Unfortunately we can not repair the damage but good news is we can reconstruct his skin once we treat the cancer. He will never have a functioning nose but he will be able to function and live a good life. He will breathe using his mouth and as long as he responds well to the antibiotics and chemotherapy he will be able to live a happy quality of life!!!,” the organization posted on their Facebook page.
Yes, the friendly pooch who lifts his head at any moment for a hug or a scratch from his rescuers and who wags his tail when he hears the words, “good boy” may look a bit different after his reconstructive surgery, but he is expected to live a good quality of life. (Dicken’s eyesight is reported to be fine)
We will be checking back on Dickens soon and providing updates.
