In Thailand, an off duty rescue worker was called upon to help a baby elephant on Sunday after he was struck by a motorcycle while crossing a road with a herd of elephant in the province of Chanthaburi.
In a video that went viral on Monday, Mana Srivate could be seen giving two-handed compressions on the baby elephant’s chest as it rested on its side. Motorists close by treated the injured motorcyclist. Neither the elephant nor the motorcycle driver were seriously injured.
According to Reuters, Srivate stated it was his instinct to save lives, but he had been worried while treating the baby elephant because he had been hearing the mother elephant calling for her baby.
“I assumed where an elephant heart would be located based on human theory and a video clip I saw online. When the baby elephant starting to move, I almost cried,” he said.
Ten minutes later, the baby was up on his feet and was moved to another location for further treatment. He was then returned to where the accident occurred so his mother could easily find him; the baby had been crying for his mom and she soon returned.
