Public’s help needed at Manhattan animal shelter shut down due to Covid19

At New York City’s animal shelter in Manhattan, staff members have tested positive for Covid-19 causing the agency to temporarily shut down and plead for help from local animal rescues and citizens alike to care for the animals. On Tuesday evening, the entire staff at Animal Care Centers of NYC in Manhattan located at E. 110th St. near Second Ave. went into quarantine thus closing the entire building.

On Tuesday, the message on Twitter spread quickly.

Animal Care Centers

@NYCACC
COVID cases among staff and subsequent quarantines have left us no choice but to temporarily close our Manhattan Care Center. We are essential workers who have never stopped working face to face with the public during this pandemic. We hope to reopen soon. Brooklyn remains open.
And on Tuesday evening, an email was sent out from ACC officials stating:
“We are facing an emergency situation. Our staff responsible for walking the dogs, feeding the animals, cleaning their kennels and more are unable to come to the shelter for the next two weeks.
While we have staff from other departments pitching in to help, we are unable to properly care for the animals with such little human power.”
The shelter has been transferring pets to their Brooklyn and Staten Island facilities, but are pleading with the public to temporarily foster pets and asking people to visit the shelter and take an animal home. The shelter has offered to pay for a Lyft ride for anyone who is able to help.
For the next two weeks, only emergency services will be available for critically ill or injured animals. According to the New York Daily News, Best Friends, ASPCA, Animal Haven, Sean Casey Animal Rescues, Amsterdog, Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition, Eskies Online, Feline Rescue of Staten Island and Odd Cat Sanctuary
are helping with the overflow of pets. ACC volunteers have also been instrumental.
A virtual orientation for potential foster volunteers was set up for Sunday. The link can be found at nycacc.org.
