A Greater Manchester Police firearms officer has been banned from owning any pets for the next five years after appearing at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Friday for charges of animal cruelty in the repeated punching of his five-month-old puppy for defecating on the rug.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Sergeant Martin Dunn, 48, based at the Manchester Airport, said he “saw red” and then attacked the Springer Spaniel hitting the puppy multiple times in his garden. Prosecutors in court stated Dunn had been drinking at the time when the offense occurred and was heard shouting and calling the dog named Frank, ” you little bast***” before repeatedly punching it.
Dunn pleaded guilty to one count of animal cruelty at an earlier hearing. The judge called for the pup to be rehomed by the RSPCA and banned Dunn from any further contact.
According to the court hearing, Dunn suffers from PTSD and has shown remorse for beating the puppy. When the pup was assessed by a veterinarian and behavioral specialist, Frank reacted with extreme fear when shouted at indicating he has learned to fear that kind of behavior.
Dunn was also sentenced to 120 hours of unpaid work. He has not been suspended from work, however an internal investigation has been launched.
