In Encinitas, California, a woman and her dog were reunited after a volunteer an animal shelter flew 2,500 miles across the country to Florida with a Chihuahua named Papi where and his owner would be together again.
According to the Rancho Coastal Humane Society, Yohama arrived at the border in Calexico seeking asylum from Cuba; she arrived with her dog in her arms. At the border, however authorities took custody of the dog and Papi was sent to an animal shelter.
After Yohama’s release, she traveled to Florida to be with relatives and the shelter had no idea where Papi’s owner had gone. When the dog’s 30 day stay at the shelter was over and he was about to be placed up for adoption, the Rancho Coastal Humane Society offered to take him in, and for weeks searched for his owner. And just days later Papi’s owner called.
The reunion in Tampa was a happy tearful event. Papi saw his mom and ran towards her as quickly as the Chihuahua’s legs would motor – his tail never stopped wagging.
Our thanks to volunteer Karen Zinser who made the cross-country trip with Papi, watched the emotional reunion of a dog and his owner and then turned around, boarded the plane and flew home just hours later. It’s what makes heroes.
