In Los Angeles, California, a dramatic chase ended in a watery rescue this weekend after a 39-year-old woman from New Mexico, allegedly speeding in a silver BMW, led police on a high-speed chase before driving straight into the Pacific Ocean at Venice Beach. Thankfully, the incident resulted in no human injuries, but the driver’s actions put two canine companions in serious danger.
According to the Los Angeles Times, and California Highway Patrol, (CHP), the woman was going at an estimated 85 mph when officers tried to stop her on the I-10 Freeway. The chase, which reached speeds as low as 35 mph on city streets, traversed several Los Angeles neighborhoods before culminating in a heart-stopping plunge into the ocean.
It was a tense situation. The driver clearly endangered not only herself but also other motorists throughout the pursuit.

Thankfully, the story doesn’t end there. While the driver, later identified as Jessica Reynolds, abandoned the sinking vehicle and attempted to swim away from officers, two canine passengers were left trapped inside.
The driver was brought aboard the vessel and taken into custody in Marina Del Rey. 2 small dogs were also rescued from the vehicle. One of the small dogs was found inside of the vehicle and was in the vehicle while it was in the shoreline for approximately 30 minutes until first responders were able to get it out of the vehicle. It ran off onto the beach parking lot before running back towards the suspect’s vehicle. The dog was then brought to safety by lifeguards. Both dogs were transported to Hawthorne Animal Shelter to be checked out and held for adoption once they were deemed eligible by shelter officials.

Thankfully, the K-9 unit for CHP had been able to assist the marine police reaching the vehicle and rescuing the dogs. The Boston terriers were not harmed and taken to a local animal shelter.
These pups are very lucky. This incident highlights the importance of keeping pets securely harnessed in vehicles. It could have easily ended much differently.”

The dogs are currently being held at the shelter while authorities attempt to locate their rightful owner or next of kin. Jessica Reynolds is expected to face charges related to reckless driving, evading arrest, and animal endangerment.
