Pen Farthing, the founder of the Nowzad animal shelter, continues to try and get his staff and nearly 200 rescued cats and dogs out of the country. While waiting outside of the Kabul airport just hours ago, deadly explosions occurred. Farthing claims he had been targeted by a gunman amid the chaos.
According to the Metro, 12 U.S. Service members and at least 60 Afghans have been killed including soldiers, civilians and children. Farthing and his staff including all of the animals remain safe.
“All of a sudden we heard gunshots and our vehicle was targeted, had our driver not turned around he would have been shot in the head by a man with an AK-47.”

There isn’t anything else Farthing can do at the time. The attack is suspected as having been carried out by the Islamic State group. The first explosion happened outside of the Baron Hotel which is believed to have been a suicide bomber. The second blast came from nearby Abbey Gate and is suspected as having been a car bomb.
An airbus scheduled to fly from Luton Airport to rescue the crew has been cancelled amid the chaos and the imminent dangers.
