A puppy born without legs had been left at a West Virginia veterinarian by her owner to be euthanized. Her story, which could have quickly ended in heartbreak didn’t when Sue Bell, the founder of Homeward Trails Animal Rescue in Virginia, stepped in to help.
When a plea for help came in from Fayette County Animal Control, the tiny puppy’s future seemed dim. A local breeder of the teacup dogs had brought the puppy to a veterinarian to be euthanized because she had very short and unusable legs. The vet, however had determined, except for the puppy’s deformity, she was healthy and with some special help could lead a wonderful and happy life.
The puppy was named Olivia, and who could resist her cuteness? And so Homeward Trails decided to help her and provide her with the best life possible. Mind you when she arrived at the rescue she weighed just over a half pound.
Through the generosity of donors, Olivia received the best of care. It was soon determined her best option would be a cart or doggy wheelchair. By learning to walk in a wheelchair, she would be able to maneuver around and prevent injuries to her shortened legs.
Bionic Pets made Olivia’s first prosthetic and mobility device. And when her customized and adjustable wheelchair arrives in a few weeks, there won’t be anything stopping this adorable little nugget from finding a family of her own. She is currently in a foster home; now weighs all of two pounds, gets along with other dogs and whoever adopts her, will be one of the luckiest humans ever!
Although she isn’t available yet to move on to her “forever” home, Olivia is all about being a puppy and oh so adorable.
