At the DeKalb County Animal Services, the shelter’s veterinary team is being honored and appreciated by drawing attention to #National Veterinary Technician Week where these dedicated people provide the medical care for animals that have been neglected and mistreated. Just two days ago, a skeletal Phoenix arrived at the shelter, and he was one of the most emaciated dogs the team had ever seen.
In addition, Phoenix had severely infected skin infested with fleas and parasites. The veterinarian team cleaned his wounds, fed him, administered the proper medication and put him on fluids to stabilize his condition. Thankfully, Phoenix is now in the care of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC where they have transferred him to their veterinary hospital partner for the care he needs.
According to Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, his preliminary reports indicate the severely emaciated dog only weighs 36 pounds; according to his breed and body structure he should weigh 55 to 60 pounds. He is dehydrated, his ears are abscessed inside and out and when he arrived at the veterinarian hospital still had live maggots. In addition, his eyes are infected and his skin is mostly hairless and raw.
Phoenix has a long road ahead of him. He is now being administered fluids, pain medicine and antibiotics. More tests are being performed, and more information about this poor pup’s prognosis will be updated soon.
“We just took this poor boy in who was found scavenging for food with maggots coming out of his ears. He is the MOST EMACIATED dog the GA shelter has ever seen.”
