After spending 315 days in a kennel at the Fairfield County SC Animal Shelter, lonely McDuffie’s days of being overlooked, spinning in his kennel and losing hope of ever being free has come to a glorious end. Volunteers at the Friends of Fairfield County SC Animal Shelter never gave up hope trying to find the perfect place for McDuffie.
“The powers of all of us coming together to save a life has succeeded! …Thank you to everyone for their continuous efforts sharing far and wide and to everyone who donated towards this kiddo to assist getting him out. And of course, to his Rescue group for believing in him.”

McDuffie had been surrendered by his owner on December 21, 2020; a three-year-old male who never had one serious inquiry about adoption. His advocates worried about his welfare and had been brought to tears when they watched him spinning in his run – having completely given up and losing his mind because he had been confined for such a long period of time.
A heartbreaking plea went out to social media begging for help:
“Let’s be clear. He’s not crazy. But he will be very soon if he can’t get out of the shelter. And when that happens, it’s game over. It’s too late and we lost. He lost. My concern began when I recently noticed him spinning in his kennel. Excessive spinning. It broke my heart. Literally brought tears to my eyes. For those who are not familiar with the term “kennel crazy” it’s brought on by stress and anxiety from kennel environment. Being locked up for so long. They become depressed and to go even further into it, some self mutilate, lose their appetite and are very lethargic. Kennel environment is not for many dogs especially not long term and especially not in a county facility when there is not enough stimulation to keep an animal mentally happy.”
On Sunday, McDuffie was officially tagged for rescue:
