Throughout India, stray dogs commonly live on the streets. Kind-hearted villagers feed them and care for them, but most cities don’t have veterinary hospitals for these homeless animals, and so many don’t ever get the benefit of care for even treatable conditions and too often die. Fortunately in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India, Animal Aid Unlimited is a rescue-center, hospital and sanctuary for ownerless street animals.
Just days ago, the mother of a collapsed, nearly lifeless puppy didn’t know what to do to help. Her eyes had been filled with sorrow – watching her baby die, but her eyes and her profound sadness brought attention to her situation alerting them to examine the tiny mound in the gray soil; only to see a puppy barely breathing. He twitched unconsciously, but he was still alive. They called out for help from Animal Aid Unlimited.
The puppy was rushed to the hospital. He was in shock, his temperature was low, and he needed immediate emergency treatment to warm him up. He was placed on an intravenous drip to stabilize him against going into shock as well as treat his pain. Although there were no fractures, he suffered from several deep puncture wounds on his neck. They were irrigated and cleaned. He remained comatose as the hospital staff bundled him in a basket and hoped he would survive the night.
The sun came up the next day, and the puppy had awakened from his coma, but the next task was to get him to eat.
By Day 3, he was still weak, but lots of love, attention and special handfeeding seemed to have been the catalyst for his continued progress.
Watch life return to little Snuggler, and his return home to his mom and the family.
