On Sunday afternoon, 286 dogs and cats from the Kabul Small Animal Rescue were boarded on a plane for new homes in the United States and Canada. Charlotte Maxwell-Jones and her team had been working for months to help these animals all get to safety.
On Wednesday night, they arrived in Vancouver, thanks to the joint efforts of volunteers, rescue organizations from the United States and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International. There were 158 dogs and 146 cats arriving on a converted Russian Ilyushin 76-TD plane after stops in Turkey and Iceland in order to check on the animals and refuel.
According to the Vancouver News, the flight to safety had to be rerouted at the last minute because of the conflict currently going on in Russia. The dogs and cats will be transferred to a specially constructed 17,000+ facility. About 70 of the animals are being reunited with their owners, and another two dozen will stay with the SPCA until their owners are able to be reunited with them. The others will be made available for adoption across North America.
